Spent my morning AI learning hour pair-programming with Cursor AI to refine my Portfolio 2.0 project. We made progress, but it reinforced a critical lesson: If you don't know what to ask for, AI will give you sloppy, unsustainable work.
📉 The "Junior" Mistakes: Mid-session, things got messy.
Regression: Responsive formatting broke below 700px. (it was working last night smh)🤦🏼♀️
Data Loss: In a hallucination hiccup, the AI deleted two active HTML pages.😡
The Fix: I used Git to revert the damage instantly. (Proof that version control is non-negotiable).
🧠 The "Senior" Intervention: Cursor was perfectly happy to keep hard-coding individual HTML pages forever for blog posts (when it wasn't deleting them LOL)
It solves the immediate problem, not the long-term one.
Because I have years of experience building websites, I knew that was a maintenance trap. I stopped the coding and directed the AI to build a System, not just a page.
🚀 The Result: We moved from manual updates to a sustainable workflow:
- Source of Truth: A blog-posts.json file that centrally manages metadata.
- Automation: A script that now auto-populates the homepage feed from that JSON.
- Standardization: A strict naming convention to prevent future chaos and is good for SEO if that's still a thing 😢 since AI searches.
- The Takeaway: AI is a powerful engine, but it needs a driver who knows the road. It didn't suggest the sustainable path—I had to demand it.
