I feel like this is a very silly thing to write about given the massive, complex AI integrations we deal with daily as engineers, but my experience with my fitness tracker recently gave me a brilliant reminder of what good AI UX actually looks like.
The "Left Behind" Era
To be completely honest, I never really wanted a fitness tracker. I bought a Fitbit a few years ago because it was the least expensive device that would integrate with the Personify Health app. My employer links Personify to our HSA accounts, so tracking sleep cycles and daily steps literally translates into HSA deposits. I didn't want to miss out on the funds.
For a long time, the Fitbit app felt like abandoned software. The UX was dated, features would break randomly (trying to track mindfulness minutes usually resulted in an endless spinning wheel), and the community subreddits were filled with people describing the exact same bugs. It was disheartening, but I refused to move up to a more expensive device. I didn't want a heavy piece of tech on my wrist; I just wanted my HSA points.
The Turning Point
My attitude shifted slightly in May when I took a two-week trip to Japan. We were easily hitting 20,000 steps a day, and I found myself genuinely enjoying the basic tracking and earning silly digital badges.
But the real shift happened when I returned stateside.
The AI Reality Check
Shortly after I got back, the Fitbit software underwent a massive overhaul, officially updating to the new Google Health platform.
My initial reaction was pure frustration because the update immediately broke my connection to Personify Health. Since the new app prominently featured an AI health coach, I did what any annoyed user would do: I typed out an angry complaint directly to the bot.
I expected a generic "Sorry, I don't understand" error message. Instead, the AI talked me down. It calmly provided step-by-step troubleshooting and actually helped me get the Personify software reconnected.
Once the connection was fixed, the coach started asking me thoughtful questions and offering to help augment my health goals.
As a Design Engineer, my initial cynicism was high. I honestly assumed this was a "lipstick on a pig" situation—a feature slapped together by devs during a 3-day sprint just to say the app had AI.
I was completely wrong.
I am laughing at myself for admitting this, but I now check in with the Google Health coach several times a day. It doesn't just offer generic fitness platitudes; it looks at my actual data. Recently, it helped me notice the direct correlation between my heavy work stress and drops in my Heart Rate Variability (HRV). It has made me significantly more conscious of my physical state, prompting me to actively step away from my multi-repo workspace to go out to the garden and decompress.
We spend a lot of time mapping out how to build AI into our enterprise products. This personal experience was a fantastic reminder that when an AI feature is implemented as a genuinely helpful, context-aware agent, it can take a frustrating piece of software and turn it into a tool a user actually loves.
